Virginia VRS Retirement Calculator

The Virginia Retirement System (VRS) calculates your pension as your average final compensation multiplied by your plan's retirement multiplier multiplied by your years of creditable service. The multiplier depends on your plan. Enter your numbers below for an estimate.

Enter your numbers. The percentage is pre-filled with the Virginia VRS factor that fits most members; adjust it for your tier or plan.

VRS multiplier depends on your plan: Plan 1 = 1.7%, Plan 2 = 1.65%, Hybrid = 1.0% (defined-benefit portion). Average final compensation is your highest 36 months (Plan 1) or 60 months (Plan 2/Hybrid). Hybrid members also have a separate defined-contribution account. Confirm your plan with VRS.

How the Virginia VRS formula works

VRS uses three multipliers depending on when you were hired. Plan 1 (membership before July 1, 2010) uses 1.7% per year. Plan 2 (July 1, 2010 to December 31, 2013) uses 1.65% per year. The Hybrid Retirement Plan (on or after January 1, 2014, the default for most current teachers) uses 1.0% per year on its defined-benefit side, plus a separate defined-contribution account.

The calculator above defaults to the 1.65% Plan 2 multiplier; change it to 1.7% for Plan 1 or 1.0% if you are in the Hybrid plan. Average final compensation is the average of your 36 highest consecutive months (Plan 1) or 60 highest consecutive months (Plan 2 and Hybrid). Hybrid members also build a separate defined-contribution balance this calculator does not include. Questions

How is a Virginia VRS pension calculated?

VRS multiplies your average final compensation by your plan's retirement multiplier by your years of creditable service. For example, 30 years at a $70,000 average final compensation under Plan 2 (1.65%) is 1.65% × 30 × $70,000 = $34,650 per year.

What is my VRS multiplier, 1.7%, 1.65%, or 1.0%?

It depends on your plan. Plan 1 (hired before July 1, 2010) uses 1.7%. Plan 2 (July 1, 2010 through December 31, 2013) uses 1.65%. The Hybrid plan (hired on or after January 1, 2014, where most current teachers fall) uses 1.0% on the pension side plus a separate defined-contribution account.

Do Virginia teachers get Social Security?

Yes. Virginia teachers pay into Social Security, so most receive a VRS pension and a Social Security benefit. Hybrid plan members also have a defined-contribution account, giving them three sources of retirement income to coordinate.
